When the Burning Galaxy was destroyed through the machinations of Surtur, the surviving Korbinites decided to choose a champion who would lead them to their new home. The Korbinite known as Beta Ray Bill was successful and transformed into a cybernetic being resembling a fierce creature.
Piloting his ship, Skuttlebut — Beta Ray Bill forged a path toward a new home — single-handedly warding off legions of demons sent by Surtur to annihilate their fleet.
As the Korbinite fleet was approaching the Milky Way galaxy, it was detected by S.H.I.E.L.D., and Nick Fury called upon Thor to investigate. Skuttlebutt deemed Thor a threat and so Beta Ray Bill commenced battle with him.
In the heat of battle, Thor was separated from his mighty hammer — Mjolnir. Bill picked up Mjolnir and the hammer deemed him worthy, granting him the power of Thor!
Accordingly, Odin deemed it necessary to transport both Thor and Bill to Asgard, where Bill asserted that the hammer should remain his as he had fairly won it. To settle this dispute, Odin decreed the two battle to the death in Skartheim to see who would claim Mjolnir. Bill’s Korbinite physiology granted him a fire resistance advantage in Skartheim’s lava-filled environment.
Bill bested Thor in battle, but refused to take his life.
It is believed that Odin chose this battle location to further test Bill’s worthiness and to teach Thor a lesson. Bill had chosen wisely by sparing Thor, who would later become his close ally.
Mjolnir was returned to Thor, and Odin ordered the creation of the hammer Stormbreaker, which was then granted to Bill.
With the righteous Stormbreaker by his side, Bill has since continued to protect both Korbinites and Asgardians!
